Hackney area guide

Your extensive guide to living in Hackney

Hackney is a melting pot of professionals, artists, creatives, entrepreneurs and students from all over the world. It was one of the first East London Boroughs to benefit from tremendous investment during the 2012 London Olympics.

Close to the City, Hackney is the new face of East London — a hub of alternative nightlife, sophisticated restaurants, lively markets and independent shops.

People are drawn to the area for its Victorian terraces, eccentric bars, artisanal coffee shops and plenty of green space. The area also benefits from several Michelin-starred restaurants, art galleries and high fashion boutiques, all within proximity.

Despite all its urban offerings, the area is surprisingly surrounded by plenty of green space, including Hackney Wick, Victoria Park and London Fields. With Shoreditch and Hoxton just around the corner, this Zone 2 district provides commuters with convenient access to the heart of the Capital. Hackney Central to Oxford Street takes 20 minutes via the Victoria Line at Highbury and Islington, 17 minutes to Shoreditch and 27 minutes to Canary Wharf. Commuters can also hop onto trains from the Homerton, Hackney Wick, Dalston Kingsland and Dalston Junction stations.

For overseas travel, City Airport is 35 minutes away by the Overground, while Stansted is 35 minutes away by road.

Hackney is a true cultural melting pot that has embraced all the diverse cultures that have influenced it. With several Outstanding Ofsted-rated schools in the area, it is clear why this Borough remains popular with families.
