Putney area guide

As the River Thames plays such a crucial role in the shape and culture of Southwest London, riverside neighbourhoods like Putney continue to occupy a high profile. Like Fulham on the opposing river bank, Putney is known for great maritime views, tranquil open spaces and a relaxed atmosphere. New property developments have been sensitively incorporated into the local housing stock and offer plenty of options for families as well as professionals in need of a peaceful yet still well-connected base from which to commute into the centre of the Capital.

Putney extends southwards from the river and backs up onto Putney Heath. In between these two geographical features is a thriving High Street containing gastropubs, artisan cafes and chic retail outlets. The leafy side streets are full of Victorian cottages and converted Edwardian mansions which hark back to the days when their wealthy occupants would stroll down to witness the start of the famous University Boat Race. Connections to the West End and the City can be made from either the mainline route from Putney Station or via the District Line at East Putney. The former runs through Clapham Junction and on to the City shuttle service at Waterloo. Tube trains regularly pass through East Putney on their way to Victoria and the Embankment.
