South Hampstead area guide

A network of picturesque roads that are all within walking distance of fashionable Hampstead, West Hampstead and St John’s Wood, is known as South Hampstead. The area oozes with Victorian architectural charm and benefits from highly convenient transport connections. Centred at the base of a hill (with some properties higher up taking in great skyline views), the area is full of pristine examples of tastefully converted period homes as well as some new property developments housing modern apartments.

The neighbourhood, which has an NW6 postcode, has the atmosphere of an exclusive enclave due to its small, yet selective, choice of independent shops, family-run restaurants and intimate gastropubs. Two multiplex cinemas and a comprehensively equipped sports centre are just a stone’s throw away on Finchley Road, not to mention that reliable signifier of urban regeneration: a Waitrose store. Transport links are quick and easy. An overground train service runs directly to Euston rail terminus, while the nearby Jubilee Line Underground takes you into the West End in under 12 minutes. This is a fast and flexible service that not only connects with the West End and the City but runs right through to Canary Wharf, Greenwich and Stratford.
